Definition. Positive quadratic actions [fdip-0004]

Let \((E,h)\) be a finite-dimensional real inner-product space, with \(n=\dim E\geq 0\), its finite-dimensional topology, Borel sigma-algebra and canonical Euclidean volume. The field specialization is \(E=X_V=\operatorname {Map}(V,\mathbb R)\) for a finite vertex set, including the empty set, with counting inner product \(h_V(x,y)=\sum _{v\in V}x(v)y(v)\) and coordinate Lebesgue measure. There are finitely many coordinates but, in positive dimension, continuously many configurations. Real-spin integration uses this reference convention in [friedli2017statistical, Definition 8.1 and Equation (8.3), author version p. 381]. The extension to \((E,h)\) is the same paired construction in an orthonormal chart; it asserts no ring-general probability law.

A positive precision parameter is a real linear endomorphism \(Q:E\to E\) that is self-adjoint for \(h\) and strictly positive: \(h(x,Qx)>0\) for every \(x\ne 0\). Define its symmetric bilinear form and associated quadratic form by \[b_Q(x,y)=h(x,Qy),\qquad q_Q(x)=b_Q(x,x).\] Linearity in both slots follows from linearity of \(Q\) and the pairing. Self-adjointness gives \(b_Q(y,x)=h(Qy,x)=h(y,Qx)=b_Q(x,y)\). Consequently \[q_Q(x+y)-q_Q(x)-q_Q(y)=2b_Q(x,y).\] Also \(q_Q(cx)=c^2q_Q(x)\) for every real \(c\). This is the quadratic form used here; positivity of its diagonal alone would not assert self-adjointness of an arbitrary endomorphism.

Its Euclidean quadratic action and Boltzmann weight are \[\begin {aligned} S_Q(x)&=\frac 12 q_Q(x)=\frac 12h(x,Qx),\\ w_Q(x)&=\exp (-S_Q(x)). \end {aligned}\] Thus \(q_Q=2S_Q\), \(S_Q(0)=0\), and \(S_Q(x)>0\) off zero. Dividing the polarization identity by two gives \[S_Q(x+y)-S_Q(x)-S_Q(y)=b_Q(x,y).\] The finite-coordinate formulas make \(S_Q\) continuous, hence Borel measurable, and so is its exponential. In particular \(0<w_Q(x)\le 1\), with equality \(w_Q(x)=1\) exactly when \(x=0\). This bound does not prove integrability on a space of infinite reference volume; Gaussian normalization supplies that separate argument.

The counting-array bridge recovers the familiar symmetric matrix and \(x^TQx\) notation from this operator definition. The variables and coefficients here are dimensionless: their chosen scales are absorbed into \(Q\). Wingate's Euclidean convention is \(\exp (-S)\); his lattice-spacing factors belong to his lattice model [wingate2025lattice, Sections 3-4, Equations (3.1) and (4.1)-(4.6), pp. 2-3]. This real nonnegative weight supplies no real-time evolution. The complete four-cycle action gives the concrete operator, array, half factor and test-field value.
