Example. Edge energy and the positive action [fdip-001R]

For the real alternating four-cycle, take \(t,m>0\) and let \(L_t\) be the weighted Laplacian. Its positive precision parameter is exactly \[Q_{t,m}=L_t+m^2I.\] Indeed, the displayed array of \(L_t\) has diagonal \(1+t\) and the same off-diagonal entries as the action's precision. Adding \(m^2I\) changes that diagonal to \(1+t+m^2\), giving the displayed \(Q_{t,m}\) in Example [fdip-002P].

For \(f=(a,b,c,d)\), the Euclidean quadratic action is therefore \[\begin {aligned} S_{t,m}(f) &=\frac 12\langle f,L_tf\rangle _V +\frac {m^2}{2}\langle f,f\rangle _V\\ &=\frac 12\bigl ((b-a)^2+t(c-b)^2\\ &\qquad \quad +(d-c)^2+t(a-d)^2\bigr )\\ &\qquad +\frac {m^2}{2}(a^2+b^2+c^2+d^2). \end {aligned}\] This is the same squared-difference formula as in Example [fdip-002P]: half of the edge-once energy plus the mass term. The first summand is nonnegative, and the mass summand is positive for \(f\ne 0\). This calculation compares the graph convention of [spielman2009effective, Section 2.1, pp. 4-5] with the positive kinetic sign and half-action convention of [wingate2025lattice, Section 4, Equation (4.5), p. 3]; the finite four-cycle equality follows by the substitutions above.
