Example. Fixed labels can select a different marginal [fdip-003J]

A global relabeling need not preserve a marginal requested on fixed labels. In the four-cycle, take \(t=m=1\) and retain \(R=\{0,2\}\). Its effective precision is \[S_{\mathrm {opp}}= \begin {pmatrix}7/3&-2/3\\-2/3&7/3\end {pmatrix}.\] Exchange labels \(1,2\), fixing \(0,3\), and form \(Q'=PQP^T\). If the new retained labels are still \(\{0,2\}\), they select the original adjacent variables \(\{0,1\}\). In the old coordinate order \((0,1)\mid (2,3)\), the relevant blocks are \[\begin {aligned} A=C&=\begin {pmatrix}3&-1\\-1&3\end {pmatrix},\\ H&=\begin {pmatrix}0&-1\\-1&0\end {pmatrix},\\ C^{-1}=HC^{-1}H^T &=\frac 18\begin {pmatrix}3&1\\1&3\end {pmatrix}. \end {aligned}\] Subtraction gives \[S_{\mathrm {adj}}= \begin {pmatrix}21/8&-9/8\\-9/8&21/8\end {pmatrix}.\] The diagonal entries \(7/3\) and \(21/8\) differ, so no two-coordinate permutation conjugates these precisions. There is also no map on the old retained fields factoring \(\pi _RP\) through \(\pi _R\): the fields \(0\) and \(\delta _1\) have the same old projection, but their projections after \(P\) are \(0\) and \((0,1)\). Here \(\delta _1\) is the delta field at vertex \(1\), not the edge label \(e_1\). Transporting the retained subset to \(p(R)=\{0,1\}\) in the new labels restores the square and the marginal transport theorem.

The blocks are a direct calculation from the alternating-cycle precision, using the Schur convention of [boyd2004convex, Appendix A.5.5, pp. 650-651] after exchanging its first pivot to \(C\). The example separates a fixed set of labels from the moving retained space required by Proposition [fdip-003E].
