Example. Three selectors on the same four-cycle [fdip-005F]

Take the unit four-cycle, \(m=1\), and vertex order \((0,1,2,3)\). Its full precision and covariance are \[\begin {aligned} Q&=\begin {pmatrix} 3&-1&0&-1\\-1&3&-1&0\\0&-1&3&-1\\-1&0&-1&3 \end {pmatrix},\\ G&=\frac 1{15}\begin {pmatrix} 7&3&2&3\\3&7&3&2\\2&3&7&3\\3&2&3&7 \end {pmatrix}. \end {aligned}\] Multiplication gives \(QG=I\); the full spectrum is \(1,3,3,5\). The graph and full law stay fixed in all three selections below.

In the first two panels, filled vertices are retained coordinates. In the third, the paired colors and dashed diagonals indicate the normalized sums \(x_+=(\phi _0+\phi _2)/\sqrt 2\) and \(y_+=(\phi _1+\phi _3)/\sqrt 2\); the diagonals are pairing guides, not added graph edges. All three observations have rank two.

For \(R=\{0,2\}\), use the orthonormal retained basis \((\delta _0,\delta _2)\). Compressing \(G\) and inverting gives \[\begin {aligned} C_{\mathrm {opp}}&=\frac 1{15}\begin {pmatrix}7&2\\2&7\end {pmatrix},\\ S_{\mathrm {opp}}&=\frac 13\begin {pmatrix}7&-2\\-2&7\end {pmatrix}. \end {aligned}\] The sum and difference vectors have precision eigenvalues \(5/3,3\); their product is \(\det S_{\mathrm {opp}}=5\). This is the opposite-vertex marginal.

For \(R=\{0,1\}\), use \((\delta _0,\delta _1)\). The same operation yields \[\begin {aligned} C_{\mathrm {adj}}&=\frac 1{15}\begin {pmatrix}7&3\\3&7\end {pmatrix},\\ S_{\mathrm {adj}}&=\frac 18\begin {pmatrix}21&-9\\-9&21\end {pmatrix}. \end {aligned}\] Its sum and difference eigenvalues are \(3/2,15/4\), with \(\det S_{\mathrm {adj}}=45/8\). This recovers the fixed-label counterexample as a change of selector.

Finally let \(H_2\delta _i=\delta _{i+2}\) be the half-turn and \(P_+=(I+H_2)/2\). In the orthonormal basis \[v_0=(\delta _0+\delta _2)/\sqrt 2,\qquad v_1=(\delta _1+\delta _3)/\sqrt 2\] of its image, the positive sector has \[\begin {aligned} C_+&=\frac 15\begin {pmatrix}3&2\\2&3\end {pmatrix},\\ S_+&=\begin {pmatrix}3&-2\\-2&3\end {pmatrix}. \end {aligned}\] Indeed \(Qv_0=3v_0-2v_1\) and \(Qv_1=-2v_0+3v_1\), so this space is \(Q\)-invariant and the retained precision is the restriction. Its eigenvalues are \(1,5\), with determinant \(5\). The coordinates are normalized sums \((\phi _0+\phi _2)/\sqrt 2\), \((\phi _1+\phi _3)/\sqrt 2\), not the values of two retained vertices.

All three laws follow from the selected-law theorem with the displayed basis choices. Equal rank, or even the shared determinant \(5\) of the first and third examples, does not force equal retained spectra.
