Definition. Ring-valued incidence fields [fdip-0010]

Let \(R\) be a commutative ring with identity. Choose finite sets \(V,E\) and maps \(s,h:E\to V\). The edge \(e\) goes from \(s(e)\) to \(h(e)\); loops and distinct edges with the same endpoints are allowed. Call the finite sets together with their endpoint maps the carrier. The field modules are the vertex-field module and the edge-field module \[\mathcal F_R(V)=\{f:V\to R\},\qquad \mathcal F_R(E)=\{a:E\to R\}.\] Addition, scalar multiplication and multiplication are pointwise: \[(f+g)(v)=f(v)+g(v),\quad (rf)(v)=rf(v),\quad (fg)(v)=f(v)g(v).\] These are modules and commutative unital \(R\)-algebras; the unit is the constant field \(1\).

The zero ring and an empty vertex set or edge set are allowed. On an empty set there is one field, and the constant \(1\) is also zero. No nontriviality, pairing, retained subset or positivity is assumed. The algebra convention is [stacks2017stacks, Section 22.2], Tag 09JF. The module and algebra laws are in Lemma [fdip-00AC].

The alternating four-cycle of Example [fdip-0003] is an instance of these fields.
