Remark. Counting pairings and the Dirichlet sum [fdip-00AL]

The counting inner products are \(\int fg\) with unit volume at each site or edge. For a positive weight \(w(e)\) on each edge, \[\sum _{e\in E}w(e)\,(Df)(e)^2\] is \(\int |\nabla \varphi |^2\), and \(w(e)\) is the coupling on that edge. The Gaussian laws later in the notes need this positivity. A general commutative ring gives the difference; an order that makes a sum of squares positive is further structure.
