Proposition. Changing compact-open reference subgroups [fcap-004E]
Proposition. Changing compact-open reference subgroups [fcap-004E]
Let \(Q\) be nondegenerate on a finite-dimensional rational space \(V\). The compatible compact-open reference tuples constructed from any two rational bases in Proposition [fcap-004D] agree at all but finitely many primes, in each of their O, SO and Spin families.
There is also a finite shrinking operation. Given any compatible tuple \(U\), choose open subgroups \(W_p\leq O_p\) and a finite set \(F\) such that \(U_p^O\subseteq W_p\) for \(p\notin F\). Then \[\begin {gathered} \widetilde U_p^O=U_p^O\cap W_p,\\ \widetilde U_p^{\operatorname {Spin}} =U_p^{\operatorname {Spin}}\cap (i_p\rho _p)^{-1}(W_p),\\ \widetilde U_p^{SO}=i_p^{-1}(\widetilde U_p^O) \end {gathered}\] is another compatible tuple, contained in \(U\) at every prime and equal to it outside \(F\). In particular one may take \(W_p=O_p\) outside a chosen finite set. The maps \(i_p\) and \(\rho _p\) are those of Definition [fcap-004C].
For a concrete basis change in positive dimension, replace \(b_1\) by \(2b_1\) and leave the other basis vectors fixed. The two change matrices have diagonal entries \(2\) and \(1/2\), respectively, with all other diagonal entries \(1\). Thus \(F_b=\{2\}\) suffices. The two lattices agree at every odd prime, while at \(2\) the new lattice is strictly smaller. This does not assert that their orthogonal stabilizers must differ at \(2\).
These are deductions from the lattice construction in
Proposition [fcap-004D] and the continuous local action, using the
coordinate topology of [conrad2011adelic, Proposition 2.1, p. 2].
The basis comparison is formalized by
TauCeti.QuadraticMap.eventually_integralOrthogonalSubgroup_baseChange_eq,
which also permits degenerate forms. The compatible shrinking
construction is
TauCeti.QuadraticMap.OrthogonalCompactOpens.infOpenSubgroup.
Neither construction requires a lift of an arbitrary integral
orthogonal point to Spin.
