Proposition. A rational basis supplies compatible reference subgroups [fcap-004D]

Let \(Q\) be a nondegenerate quadratic form on a finite-dimensional rational space \(V\), with basis \(b=(b_1,\ldots ,b_n)\). Use the local groups and maps of Definition [fcap-004C]. Let \(\mathbb Z_p\subseteq \mathbb Q_p\) be the ring of \(p\)-adic integers, and put \[\begin {gathered} b_{i,p}=1\otimes b_i,\\ L_p=\sum _{i=1}^n\mathbb Z_p b_{i,p},\\ H_p=\{g\in O_p:gL_p=L_p\}. \end {gathered}\] Then the choices \[\begin {gathered} U_p^O=H_p,\\ U_p^{\operatorname {Spin}}=(i_p\rho _p)^{-1}(H_p),\\ U_p^{SO}=i_p^{-1}(H_p) \end {gathered}\] form a compatible compact-open reference tuple. The Spin condition is integrality of its orthogonal action in both directions; it imposes no separate Clifford-coordinate integral model.

For example, in the hyperbolic plane \(Q(x,y)=xy\) with its standard rational basis, \(g=\operatorname {diag}(2,1/2)\) preserves \(Q\) and has determinant one. Both \(g\) and \(g^{-1}\) have integral entries at every prime except \(2\); thus \(S_O(g)=\{2\}\) works, and \(g_2\notin H_2\). This is the rational instance of the torus in Example [fcap-0048], and makes the point-dependent denominator condition explicit.

The matrix proof is a direct calculation using the local affine topology of [conrad2011adelic, Proposition 2.1 and its proof, p. 2]; the compact Spin preimage is the deduction from Theorem [fcap-0047] above. TauCeti's TauCeti.QuadraticMap.isCompact_integralOrthogonalSubgroup also permits degenerate local forms, whereas TauCeti.CliffordAlgebra.isCompact_integralSpinSubgroup requires nondegeneracy. The complete tuple is constructed in TauCeti.QuadraticMap.OrthogonalCompactOpens.integral for a nondegenerate rational quadratic form and a finite rational basis. These references concern the chosen subgroups; they assert no surjectivity of the restricted Spin action onto the orthogonal reference.
