Theorem. Invariant tensors count the gauge orbits [fdip-00A9]

Let \(G\) be a finite group, with unitary irreducible representatives as in the surface data. Let \(s,h:E\to V\) be a finite incidence presentation; loops and parallel edges are allowed, and either set may be empty. The gauge action of \(G^V\) on connections \(U\in G^E\) is \[(g\cdot U)_e=g_{h(e)}U_eg_{s(e)}^{-1}.\] A function \(F:G^E\to \mathbb C\) is gauge invariant when \(F(g\cdot U)=F(U)\) for every \(g\). The dimension of the gauge-invariant functions equals the number of orbits of this action. It also equals \[\sum _{\rho }\prod _{x\in V}\dim W_x(\rho )^G,\] where the sum runs over all assignments of irreducible representatives to the edges. For each assignment, the local space at a vertex \(x\) is the tensor product of the representation spaces of the edges leaving \(x\) and of the dual spaces of the edges entering \(x\). An empty tensor product is the scalar line. The group element \(g_x\) acts by \(\rho _e(g_x)^{-1}\) on each outgoing factor and by \((\,g_x\cdot \lambda )(v)=\lambda (\rho _e(g_x)v)\) on each incoming covector. A basis of the invariant tensors in these local spaces, as the edge assignment varies, pushes to a basis of the gauge-invariant functions.

The datum of an edge assignment together with one invariant tensor at each vertex is the finite spin-network datum of this note. Nothing proved here identifies that datum with a continuous orthonormal basis, or with the charged multiplicity spaces.
