Theorem. An edge derivative is half its variance [fdip-005S]

For the induced action, with \(m>0\) fixed, \[\frac {\partial \mathcal W}{\partial w_e} =\frac 12 d_e^TGd_e =\frac 12\mathbb E[(\phi _{h(e)}-\phi _{s(e)})^2],\] where \(\phi \sim N(0,G)\). Each derivative is nonnegative.

The matrix differential is the log-determinant gradient in [boyd2004convex, Appendix A.4.1, pp. 641-642]. TauCeti's Matrix.fderiv_det_apply states \(D\det (Q)[A]=\det (Q)\operatorname {tr}(Q^{-1}A)\) for a finite matrix over a complete nontrivially normed field whose determinant is a unit. Over \(\mathbb R\), positivity supplies this hypothesis. It supports the determinant derivative; the logarithm, edge direction and Gaussian interpretation are the steps proved here.
